Historic Quincy Main Street


Quincy is no sleepy town. Residents and visitors are often delighted to find that Gadsden County’s largest city has a downtown area that is a treat to the eye. The picturesque downtown is lined with old historical buildings, quaint little restaurants and shops, businesses to meet the needs of both residents and visitors alike and a magnificent courthouse right smack in the center.

In 2002 City Commissioners, the City Manager, CRA Director and had the foresight to address a waning economy downtown. Their first major accomplishment was the reinstatement of a once thriving Main Street. The Main Street program outlined a course of action using four separate components typical of all Main Streets.

The first being outreach, soliciting people’s ideas and building a community consensus.

The second component is promotion. Concern for the downtown image, retail sales and special events, a string of special events have begun. Main Street has sponsored events ranging from Unity in the Community, A Women to Women Forum and a holiday parade and festival.

The third part of the base activities is economic restructuring. This entails working to help existing businesses with seminars and marketing insights. Looking at the traditional users of downtown and how to expand and draw new users.

The fourth component of the process will be design. Appearance, painting, upkeep, parking, landscape and street furnishing are all a part of design.
